Can you apply for a visa for Spain from Abu Dhabi?
If you are legally resident in the UAE and your destination is Spain, you can apply for the visa. You do not need to hold Emirati nationality to do so.
You will need to prove that you have valid residency in the country by presenting the documents requested and providing your Emirates ID. For it to be valid, your UAE residence permit must not expire within one month of the visa’s expiry date; you need to allow some leeway, as simply having a valid card may not be sufficient.
If you notice that your residence permit is due to expire before your trip, it is best to check the status and apply for renewal. Bear in mind that proof of a pending renewal does not count as a renewed permit, so you’ll need to apply in good time to complete the process.
Your passport for travelling to Spain and your valid residence permit are two separate documents that must both be valid within the relevant timeframes.

In some cases, your visa may allow you to stay for fewer days. That is why it is important to check the duration and validity dates, as well as the total number of entries and exits you are permitted.
If you wish to live in Spain, study for more than 90 days or work in the country, you will need to explore a specific national route. Although both activities relate to your profession, the procedures for attending a business meeting or taking up permanent employment are entirely different.
The national visa has its own application procedure. In many cases, the Spanish immigration office will need to grant prior authorisation, whilst the consular office is responsible for issuing your visa. If you are clear about the purpose of your trip, you can prepare your documentation accordingly, avoiding the mistake of applying for a tourist visa for a project that requires residency.
Where and how do I apply in Abu Dhabi?
To submit your Schengen visa application, you will need to visit BLS International on behalf of the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi. You will find them in office 1311, on the 13th floor of Tamouh Tower, Marina Square, Al Reem Island.
It is important to understand that although BLS receives the documentation, the decision to approve or reject it always rests with the consular authority.
Book an appointment via the official BLS channel and check their up-to-date instructions. You can submit your application up to six months before your trip. BLS UAE allows a minimum of three weeks to process the application, but the waiting time to secure an appointment is not included in this timeframe.
If you’re planning to travel in the summer or during holiday periods, it’s best to plan ahead, as places may run out. Before paying for non-refundable bookings, check that you have enough time to submit any additional documents if the embassy requests them.

Health insurance valid within the Schengen area, with a minimum cover of 30,000 euros and repatriation cover.
Are you planning to move to Spain?
If, as well as visiting Spain, you intend to move to this country, you should be aware that there are three different types of residence permit:
Non-lucrative residence permit: this allows you to live in Spain provided you can prove you have sufficient financial resources and health insurance. This type of residence permit does not authorise you to carry out any work or professional activity. It may be suitable for you if you have sufficient savings.
Residence and work: if you have a job offer, it will need to be checked which permit applies and what procedures your employer must follow. If you wish to work as a self-employed person, your business plan and the resources you need to carry out your work will be assessed.
Study: there are long-term study programmes that require a temporary stay. To grant this, they will review aspects such as admission, the programme, financial means and health cover. This permit does not always allow you to work whilst studying.
